Fiber Arts Guild Exhibit

Take advantage of art exhibits in media you
don't normally work in to get ideas to move your
art forward. The Santa Barbara Fiber ArtsGuild Exhibit at the Faulkner Gallery from November 2 to 28 gave me lots of ideas to try in my own drawing and painting.

Many of the wall hangings were examples of how colors relate to each other without trying to form particular objects. Bingo. I can borrow some palette choices for their emotional or aesthetic value. Good thing I brought along my sketchbook to write down these ideas.

Other pieces reminded me about a repeating pattern and stitching functioning as lines in a drawing to direct the viewer's eye. These lines were dashed lines which I don't normally use. What other kinds of lines can I make?

Surface texture I often ignore and its tactile quality reaches out to be touched in these pieces.

Collage with various assembled fabrics was shown. Collage in my drawings is overdue.

Functional art like a hat or decorations to make a bicycle more visible and personal were possible ideas to pursue.

The traditional historical aspect of needing to make your own items is a possible direction.

Sustaining resources and recycling materials to use in your art form could lead to interesting possibilities.

Working on a large scale with the piece becoming the environment is possible. Attaching multiple sheets of paper together to make a larger drawing or painting?

Appreciation for the discipline and concentrated focus involved in spending the hours necessary to complete these pieces can pay dividends like a meditative peace of mind. I enjoy the intense silence in drawing class that happens after a few minutes when everybody is really involved in seeing and mark-making.

The bottom line is we all want to grow in our art and we need ideas to incorporate. Ample ideas abound if we just look.
