Portrait Style

Some of the portraits painted a few years ago rely on intuitive placement of paint and brushstrokes--the gestural method of surrealists and abstract expressionists.

Green in the face always reminds me of modernist Matisse and his portrait of his wife that made a big commotion and delayed Leo Stein's purchase. In my more recent portraits the Cubists and their fractured planes have entered the equation.

Modern Art proceeding through Cubism first broke open the shapes allowing areas for flat space and decoration. Later Cubism allowed synthesis and combining various elements.
Here is a picture I call "How I Got My Good Looks", purely for fun.
